The ITLS Approach

The smart choice for your trauma training

International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) is a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing death and disability from trauma through education and emergency trauma care. Founded in 1985 as Basic Trauma Life Support International, ITLS adopted a new name in 2005 to better reflect its global role and impact.

Today, ITLS has more than 90 chapters and training centres in over 35 countries around the world. ITLS is the only prehospital trauma program endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

ITLS is accepted internationally as the standard training course for pre-hospital trauma care. Not only are courses taught as a continuing education option, but they are also used as essential curricula in many paramedic, EMT and first responder training programs.

Focused content that delivers ITLS courses give the student the knowledge and hands-on skills to take better care of trauma patients. ITLS stresses rapid assessment, appropriate intervention and identification of immediate life threats. The ITLS framework for rapid, appropriate and effective trauma care is a global standard that works in any situation.

ITLS courses combine classroom learning, hands-on skills stations, and assessment stations that put learning to work in simulated trauma scenarios. Each ITLS course includes a, evidence-based course manual with in-depth content written and edited by trauma care experts based on current research. ITLS courses are designed, managed and delivered by course directors, coordinators and instructors experienced in EMS, pre-hospital care and the ITLS approach.

ITLS is an approved provider by the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) [formerly CECBEMS] and all ITLS courses are CAPCE certified.

Endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has endorsed ITLS since 1986 and recognizes the importance of quality pre-hospital care. It is dedicated to a leadership role in improving the standards and training of EMS providers. EMS providers, emergency nurses, and emergency physicians are members of the same team. If EMS providers are well trained and receive quality medical direction, the patients for whom they care will likely have a better chance of recovery.

No group is in a better position to understand the needs and circumstances of EMS providers than the emergency physicians with whom they work. ITLS is supported in its educational efforts by National ACEP and individual ACEP chapters. National ACEP maintains a close liaison with ITLS and has an appointed seat to the Board of Directors.

Do You Want to Become an ITLS Tips Canada Training Centre Instructor?

ITLS is proud to introduce the ITLS Instructor Course, a Blended-Learning Approach

This course combines an online component with a classroom component in a program designed to better prepare instructors with the skills and knowledge to deliver ITLS training more effectively to a global audience.

Here’s how the new ITLS Instructor program works:

1.  Successfully complete the ITLS Provider course you wish to teach (Advanced or Basic, or Pediatric). Individuals who complete an Advanced course are eligible to teach Basic or Advanced level courses.

2.  Earn the Instructor Potential designation by achieving specific scores on both the Written and Practical Exams at the Provider course:

  • At least 86% on the Written Exam
  • Excellent on the Patient Assessment Practical Exam

3.  Purchase and complete the Instructor Course Online Component, an 8-module online course built on a foundation of adult education principles.

4.  Attend an Instructor Course Classroom Component course, where you will review and practice facilitating skill stations, administering testing procedures, and evaluating student performance.

5.
Be monitored teaching a lecture, skill station, and testing at an ITLS Provider course.

6.
Receive your ITLS Instructor card and become eligible to instruct at ITLS courses.

NOTE: If you have not already met the requirements outlined in items #1 and #2 above, you will need to complete them before you are eligible to become an ITLS instructor.

Do not purchase the Instructor Course Online Component program unless you are certain you have fulfilled these requirements.

If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to take the Instructor Course Online Component to become an ITLS Instructor, please contact your local Chapter or Training Centre before purchasing the program.

8th Edition Instructor Update

ITLS introduced the ITLS 8th Edition Instructor Update in 2015 as a required tool for ITLS instructors to update to the 8th edition ITLS provider manual. All instructors are required to complete the 8th Edition Instructor Update Online before they are allowed to teach from the 8th edition textbook.

The Instructor Update Online cannot be used to renew an Instructor certification if you have previously completed the 8th Edition Update program, or if you received your initial Instructor certification after November 2015.

Haven’t yet updated to the 8th edition?

Instructor Bridge Course

Current PHTLS, TNCC or ATLS instructors are eligible to take an Instructor Bridge Course to facilitate reciprocal certification and become a certified ITLS Instructor. The Instructor Bridge program requires the successful completion of the Instructor Course Online Component and an in-person Classroom Component. ITLS instructor candidates who successfully complete these requirements must be monitored teaching an ITLS course to gain ITLS instructor certification.
